Akira originated as a comic book series from 1982 first published in Young Magazine.
Following its popularity in Japan, its themes of psychic powers, teenage gangs and
science fiction proved similarly popular in the west. It was published in the US and has
undergone numerous reprints and has been translated into different languages.
